The obesity epidemic in the United States is leading more and more people to opt for bariatric surgery to help them lose dramatic amounts of weight. Losing all the weight, whether through surgery or long-term calorie deficit weight loss, is quite an accomplishment.
That’s why it seems so unjust that your skin didn’t get the message. Without all the underlying weight, the skin now hangs like a sheet. That’s because if the skin and support tissues are over-stretched for a long period of time, the skin often cannot rebound and tighten down to its former slimmer contours.
This can be very discouraging for a person who has worked so hard to lose the weight. But Dr. Turk can perform body contouring surgeries to remove excess skin and reposition muscles and complete your body transformation. After body contouring surgeries, the patient will be slim and have tighter skin to match the new contours.
What procedures could be a part of body contouring?
There isn’t a set list of procedures with body contouring; Dr. Turk performs what is needed for each individual patient. During your consultation, the two of you will discuss what areas you want to address.
The single most involved procedure is a body lift, which targets the lower torso and upper legs. The goal of a body lift is to sculpt the abdomen, lower back, buttocks, hips, and thighs.
These are the various procedures that Dr. Turk may include in body contouring. With most of these procedures, liposuction may be added to remove stubborn pockets of fat.
- Body lift
- Breast reduction
- Tummy tuck
- Thigh lift
- Arm lift
- Buttock lift
Despite which areas are addressed in your body contouring surgeries, the goals are the same — to make an incision, reposition and tighten underlying muscles, trim excess skin, and remove excess pockets of fat. Incisions from procedures such as body lifts are extensive, but Dr. Turk minimizes scarring where possible by placing the incisions in locations where they fall within a natural crease or can be hidden by clothing.
In some cases, multiple procedures can be combined into a single surgery. But overly lengthy surgery times can be risky, so Dr. Turk usually splits up his body contouring procedures. He does combine wherever possible to minimize recovery time, but there are limits.
