Everyone could use some lifting, toning, and tightening across their face, jawline, neck, and décolletage, but many people aren’t ready to opt for a facelift or neck lift to do so. Now there is a non-surgical alternative, Ultherapy®. Ultherapy® uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten skin naturally, without a minute of downtime.
Dr. Turk offers Ultherapy® at Naples Cosmetic Surgery.
What is Ultherapy®?
Ultherapy® uses a trusted medium for its skin lifting and tightening — ultrasound. Ultrasound has been used for over 50 years in imaging, but Ultherapy® is the only non-invasive procedure that the FDA has approved using ultrasound to lift the skin on the face, neck, under the chin, and even on the brows.
How does Ultherapy work?
In an Ultherapy® session, a handpiece is passed lightly over the skin. It delivers focused ultrasound energy down into the dermis, the second layer of the skin beneath the epidermis. When this ultrasound energy reaches the deeper levels in the skin the energy heats up the skin’s foundation. The body perceives this as a wound and responds by producing new amounts of collagen and new skin cells to address the “wound,” despite the fact that there is no actual injury. The new collagen and skin cells improve the tone and texture of the skin in the treatment area.
Unlike some tightening procedures that can damage the epidermis, Ultherapy’s ultrasound energy passes right through the epidermis into the dermis. This protects the outer skin surface and is more comfortable than other procedures. Plus, there isn’t any downtime. This separates Ultherapy® from various laser procedures.
Would I be a good candidate for Ultherapy?
Ultherapy® delivers some of the same tightening effects as a facelift, although it does not achieve that level of change. Ultherapy® is a good procedure for candidates who have mild to moderate skin laxity across the eyebrows, the neck, under the chin, and who have lines or wrinkles on the décolletage.
Ultherapy® won’t replace a facelift, but it is a good alternative for patients who either don’t want to have surgery or are looking for ways to extend a prior facelift, neck lift, or brow lift.
When will I begin to see my results from Ultherapy?
You may have some initial tightening, but most results will come over the next 2-3 months as your body produces new collagen.
How long will my results last?
Your body will produce new amounts of collagen in reaction to Ultherapy’s ultrasound energy. This new collagen rejuvenates and tightens the skin. However, your body will continue to produce less collagen (one percentage point less every year after your 20th birthday), so natural aging will continue.
How many sessions will I need?
Most Naples Cosmetic Surgery patients only need one initial Ultherapy® session to realize the results they seek. But your body’s natural collagen production will continue to decrease, so additional treatments down the road will help maintain your results. We’ll talk to you about these during your session.
Is there any downtime or side effects with Ultherapy?
Ultrasound has been used in diagnostics for decades; the human body tolerates this sort of energy very well. After your session, your skin may appear flushed, but this will disappear within a few hours in most cases. Some patients experience slight swelling, tingling, or tenderness on the treated areas, but this also resolves quickly.
There is no recovery with Ultherapy®. Immediately after your session, you can go right back to work, exercise, or your other normal activities.
Does Ultherapy hurt? What does it feel like?
When the ultrasound energy is delivered into your dermis, you’ll feel a slight warming sensation, sometimes accompanied by a slight prickly feeling. Patients don’t feel the procedure is painful. We recommend our patients take 800 mg of over-the-counter ibuprofen about 45 minutes before their Ultherapy® session.
