How Do I Know When to Have a Facelift?
- Posted on: May 30 2018
The decision to have a Facelift is based on the need to lift and shape loose facial tissue. The aging face is like a balloon that deflates. It loses volume, becomes saggy and there is no shine on it’s surface. So, a board certified plastic surgeon would be looking at three things in today’s facelift rejuvenation plan.
-First, would be the care for collagen restoration on the skin surface. Retinoid and vitamin C serum skin care products and moisturizers help to rebuild the skin tone. Additionally Hydra-facials, micro-needling with amnion serum or platelet rich plasma, microdermabrasion, broadband light laser, micro-laser erbium peel all contribute to restoring collagen density in the dermal layers of your skin.
-Second, would be volumizing deflated areas with fat and other fillers (i.e. cheeks, temples, jawline, chin, perioral lines and lips). Besides fat grafting placed under skin and performed simultaneously with the facelift, these would include the Hyaluronic fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane injectables for the dermal layers of the face. Specifically Juvederm Voluma (Restylane Lyft) for the cheek lift and temple augmentation, Juvederm Vollure (Restylane Define/Refine) for smoothing out the perioral smile and marionette lines, Juvederm Volbella (Restylane silk) for reducing the “smoker lines” and augmenting the lips.
-Third, would be shaping or re-positioning saggy areas in the face with surgery. The brow shaping would include an endoscopic, minimally invasive technique which minimizes scars and numbness in the scalp. The eyelids can be included to tighten the upper and lower eyelid skin, reducing bags under the eyes. The cheeks, jowls and neck are lifted and tightened to shape a youthful appearing face. The natural, rested result and not the pulled or overdone look is desired for all my patients. The shape of the face lasts up to 10 years.
Any or all of these three options could be considered in each individual case. Other nonsurgical devices include Ultherapy that also helps shape the face, but is not a facelift.
