Liposuction in Naples, Florida

Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure used to remove localized areas of fat from the body through a small thin tube called a cannula. The fat from the targeted area is suctioned from the body through this tube to help patients achieve a slim and balanced appearance.

While the conventional liposuction procedure was effective in removing excessive fat deposits, it was a painful procedure that involved suctioning out large areas of solid fat. New technology has allowed for different techniques that improve the accuracy and reduce the pain associated with this procedure. Today, liposuction is usually performed via the tumescent technique or with the help of ultrasound imaging or a laser. These new technologies have transformed liposuction into a much safer and less invasive procedure.

Candidates For Liposuction

The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who is in good overall health and maintains a healthy life but has one or more problem areas with unresponsive fat deposits. It is also important for patients to have realistic expectations, and remember that liposuction cannot be used as a means for major weight loss. It is instead used to remove localized areas of stubborn fat after the patient has attempted other natural weight loss methods.

What Parts Of The Body Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction can help remove unwanted fatty deposits from just about anywhere on the body. Some of the common locations on which this procedure is performed include:

  • Thighs
  • Abdomen
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Hips
  • Buttocks
  • Chest
  • Face
  • Calves
  • Ankles

This procedure may be performed alone or can be combined with other cosmetic procedures, such as a facelift, breast reduction or tummy tuck, to achieve maximum results.

Combining Liposuction With Other Procedures

Liposuction is often combined with lifting procedures to enhance the results we can achieve. Some of the techniques that may be performed at the same time as liposuction include abdominoplasty, Brachioplasty on the backs of the arms, thigh lift, buttock lift, facelift, and breast procedures. Dr. Turk customizes each surgical treatment plan after a comprehensive consultation with each patient. When you visit us, you can expect to discuss all of your cosmetic concerns and learn which techniques can be most beneficial to you.

How Can I Prepare For The Liposuction Procedure?

To achieve the best results from liposuction, patients are encouraged to implement healthy lifestyle habits well in advance. These include developing a healthy diet that will sustain the new, slimmer physique and engaging in enjoyable exercise activities that promote efficient metabolism.

In the few weeks before liposuction, patients should focus on rest, stress management, and reducing their surgical risks. The primary ways to do this include:

  • Avoid smoking and nicotine use
  • Stop taking medications and supplements that thin the blood (as instructed by the doctor)
  • Limit alcohol use or avoid alcohol altogether for a week or two before surgery

The Liposuction Procedure Explained

There are several different techniques currently available for patients seeking liposuction treatment. New technologies have improved the accuracy of this procedure for both patient and doctor, and allows patients to achieve their desired results through a much less invasive procedure. Liposuction is performed through a tumescent technique, and may also include the assistance of ultrasound imaging or laser energy.

Liposuction is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. Your doctor will make several tiny incisions and inject a local anesthetic into the area to help expand and firm the fat, making it easier to remove. The cannula is then inserted through the incisions to suction out the fat. No stitches are needed after liposuction since the incisions are small enough to heal on their own.

In laser-assisted tumescent liposuction, a laser is used to liquefy the targeted fat before it is removed, allowing for an easier and less painful removal. The laser may also be used to tighten skin in the treated area after fat is removed. Similarly, ultrasound-assisted liposuction uses ultrasound energy to liquefy fat before it is removed for a smoother removal process.

What Is "Tumescent" Liposuction?

The tumescent technique is a liposuction method that can reduce post-operative bruising, swelling, and pain. It can be used with all cannula techniques such as Vaser, Ultrasonic and Smart Lipo. In the tumescent technique, areas of excess fat deposits are filled with a large amount of anesthetic fluid before liposuction is performed. The liquid causes the compartments of fat to become swollen and firm or "tumesced." This numbs the area and constricts capillary blood vessels to reduce blood loss. The expanded fat compartments allow the liposuction cannula to travel smoothly beneath the skin as the fat is removed. The tumescent liposuction can be performed without general anesthesia when removing smaller amounts of fat in the face and body contouring. For more information call 239-316-1689.

Is Liposuction The Same As Lipodissolve?

No, they are different. Removal of unwanted fat in the face and body is performed by liposuction. One of the most common procedures performed in plastic surgery, liposuction requires tumescent local anesthesia or even general anesthesia. This is real surgery and should be performed in a state accredited outpatient facility.

Removal of fat non-surgically with injection lipolysis (Kybella), is currently performed in the office. This is a chemical injected into the subcutaneous fat that melts or breaks down the fat into liquid, which eventually is absorbed naturally by the body. The fat is not removed by liposuction. Instead, it takes longer to achieve the final result without surgery. There are also nonsurgical approaches with freezing the fat with Coolsculpting or melting with Heat sculpting. Recovery From Liposuction

After the liposuction procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area. Compression garments or elastic bandages may be used to help reduce these symptoms while the area heals. Patients can return to work and other regular activities as soon as they feel comfortable, which is usually after a few days. Exercise and other strenuous activities should be avoided for a few weeks.

Your doctor will give you special instructions on how to care for your treated area and reduce any complications after the procedure. The results of the liposuction procedure may not be visible until after swelling and bruising subside. This may take several months, and results will appear gradually throughout this time.

The Results You Can Expect From Lipo

Liposuction patients can expect to see some degree of improvement as soon as their procedure is completed. However, swelling and bruising are common post-surgical side effects, and these obstruct the outcome of surgery for a week or two. The doctor may advise wearing a compression garment for several days to help move fluid out of tissues and reduce swelling more expeditiously. While swelling continues to subside for several weeks, patients can visualize much of their improvement after 7 to 10 days.

Will I have noticeable scarring from liposuction?

No. Liposuction is performed using a very thin hollow tube. Dr. Turk makes incisions as small as possible to safely accommodate the cannula, and in the most discreet places possible. Scarring is a natural part of skin healing, so patients can expect to see a small pink or red spot about the size of the average freckle where the cannula was inserted. Over time, most of these scars fade to a very pale skin tone or white spot. Once the incision has completely healed, you may apply a scar cream or silicone scar treatment to help reduce the appearance of the scar as much as possible.

Liposuction Risks

Although liposuction is considered safe, there are certain risks associated with any type of procedure. Some of these risks may include infection, scarring, allergic reactions, hematoma or unsatisfactory results. Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures and is almost always performed with no serious complications.

Will I Need More Liposuction In The Future?

Liposuction can be a one-time procedure that achieves beautiful, lasting results. It can also be a procedure that needs repeating in the future. You hold the key to this potential. If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise program after your liposuction procedure, you can expect your results to remain satisfactory for years. Of course, the skin and connective tissue does continue to age, so you may notice sagging over time. This is a natural sign of aging, though, not an indication that fat cells have enlarged. The good news is that liposuction is a safe and effective procedure. If you determine that you need a touch-up in the future, you could safely do so.
