Botox is an incredible success story in the aesthetic world. Year in and year out it is the world’s most popular cosmetic procedure, surgical or non-surgical. Known as a neuromodulator, Botox is used to erase crow’s feet and other lines on the upper third of the face. The FDA first approved Botox for cosmetic use in 2002.
About a decade ago, two new neuromodulators became available: Dysport and Xeomin.
Last spring a new option entered the wrinkle reduction fray, Jeuveau™. Jeuveau™ received FDA approval in February 2019 and is now offered by Dr. Turk at our beautiful Naples offices.
What is Jeuveau?
Jeuveau™ is a new neurotoxin made by the California-based Evolus Corporation. The FDA approved it in February of last year for the treatment of glabellar lines, the lines colloquially known as frown lines or the 11s. Jeuveau is a new alternative to Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin.
How does Jeaveau work?
Like Botox, Jeuveau™ is a neuromodulator made primarily from the botulinum toxin type A. When injected into a muscle, the botulinum toxin in Jeuveau™ blocks the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. Because the brain never receives the nerve signals to contract the muscle, the muscle stays at rest. As we form various expressions, such as frowning or showing surprise, this engages muscles around our eyes, between our brows, and on the forehead. Over time and hundreds of thousands of contractions, wrinkles begin to form on the surface skin when we make these expressions. When Jeuveau™ is injected and relaxes the muscle, it keeps the wrinkle from forming on the skin above.
How does Jeuveau compare with BOTOX?
Jeuveau™ and Botox are basically the same. Both are made from the botulinum toxin type A. Both work by blocking the nerve messages sent from a muscle to the brain, keeping the muscle relaxed.
The only real difference between these two neurotoxins is price. Jeuveau™ has been initially priced from 20 to 30 percent lower than the price of Botox.
Is Jeuveau better than BOTOX?
As noted above, Jeuveau™ and Botox are, for all intents and purposes, the same product. They work the same way. The only real difference is the price.
