The cheekbones are called the malar bones. Cheek implants are created to give definition back to the malar bones. The implants are available in different shapes and sizes to fit your goals and expectations. During your consultation with Dr. Turk, our Vectra 3D Imaging System allows you to see what different shaped implants will look like on your face.
Cheek implants are generally categorized in three general shapes: malar, submalar, or combined. Malar implants are the most common and are placed directly on the cheekbones. They provide more projection to the cheekbones, giving a higher contour to the side of the face. Submalar implants are not placed on the cheekbones, but instead in the mid-face area where the patient has lost volume. Combined implants augment both the cheekbones and the mid-face.
How are cheek implants positioned?
Dr. Turk makes a short incision either inside the mouth, between the gums and the lower lip, or in the lower eyelid. When cheek augmentation is a stand-alone procedure, he usually opts for the incision in the mouth. He then forms small pockets in the eventual final location and the implants are placed there. The incisions are then closed and the stitches removed in about 10 days, or they will dissolve in around the same timeframe if placed in the mouth.
Cheek augmentation with fillers
At Naples Cosmetic Surgery, we also use dermal fillers such as Restylane and Perlane for cheek enhancement, replacing volume that has been lost to time. Unlike implants, fillers are not permanent improvements, however. They have to be injected again once the body absorbs the filler, which occurs with all fillers over different lengths of time.
