Strengthening Your Chin

man keeping hand on chin and looking away If you’re a Panthers fan, you may have been watching a Gordie Howe retrospective during COVID and you noticed lots of fancy stickhandling, lots of big-time hits…and his chin. Man, Mr. Hockey had a strong chin. The next day you looked in the mirror and found your chin to be, for lack of a better word, lacking.

What can you do? A weak chin can define your face, and it’s not exactly like you can do exercises to strengthen it.

But you can come see us at Naples Cosmetic Surgery and have Dr. Turk perform chin augmentation to give you the chin you’d like to see every morning.

Chin augmentation involves the use of chin implants to increase the projection, or removal and repositioning of the chin tissues to decrease an overly pointy chin. Chin augmentation will help patients with weak chins, asymmetric chins, those with sagging skin in the area, or anyone who desires a stronger profile. It also changes facial proportions, as a weak chin can make the face appear fleshy and without definition on the lower half. For many chin augmentation patients, they seek to bring their facial features into harmony with a larger, more pronounced chin.

What are chin implants?

Chin implants are made of GORE-TEX or silicone and come in a variety of shapes. If necessary, Dr. Turk can also carve the implant to a certain degree to change specifics and create a custom fit for your unique facial structure.

What’s involved in chin augmentation?

Dr. Turk performs chin augmentation procedures in our offices on Pine Ridge Road in Naples on an outpatient basis. The procedure usually takes around one hour.

Chin implants are inserted through an incision made inside the mouth or under the chin. Obviously, incisions made inside the mouth create no visible scarring. But incisions under the chin are very well hidden, as well. Once Dr. Turk makes the incision, the next step is to create a pocket for the implant. This is placed in front of the jawbone. He then places the implant, checks the location, and sutures it into place.

Chin augmentation can also be accomplished with dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane. Their effects are temporary, however. Dermal fillers are a good way for a patient to “demo” a new chin before committing to implants.

Afterwards

Obviously, your results are immediate. Patients typically feel slight numbness in the chin and the lips. The area will also feel tight, as you would assume, with the new implant in place. There will be some swelling and bruising, but this is not dramatic. Patients with incisions inside the mouth need to be on a soft diet for a few days while their gums heal. Most patients can return to work and day-to-day activities in a week or so.
