Get the Facts About Botox®

For many women looking to turn back the clock by smoothing lines and wrinkles on their face, Botox® can be a saving grace. Botox® (or Botulinum Toxin) is an injectable product used to reduce the appearance of lines between the eyebrows, on the forehead, for crow’s feet, and around the lips, helping to obtain a natural, younger look.
If you’re thinking about jumping on the Botox® bandwagon, here are a few things to know before you take the plunge:
Is Botox® treatment safe?
Cosmetic procedures such as Botox are very safe and have a very low rate of side effects.
Does it hurt?
Anesthesia is not necessary when receiving Botox®. Injections are virtually painless and are made using a very fine needle. While most people do not experience discomfort, you may want a numbing agent beforehand. Suitable numbing agents include the injection of a numbing medication or the application of a topical cream prior to the procedure.
How long does the procedure last?
The procedure typically takes about 10 minutes and there is minimal down time. It is advised that you do not rub or massage the area after the procedure, however, as it can cause the toxin to drift to a different area.
How soon will I see results?
You may begin to see results within two to 10 days. Most patients enjoy the results of Botox for about three to four months. As lines and wrinkles, begin to reappear, retreatment is required. However, these lines and wrinkles should appear less visible over time as the treated muscles become trained to relax.
What are the side effects?
Bruising, redness and swelling are the most common side effects of Botox. To minimize the possibility of bruising and swelling, it’s a good idea to avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours, as well as Ibuprofen, Tylenol and other aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs for two weeks prior to the procedure. Other side effects may include dry mouth, tiredness, headache, decreased eyesight and dry eyes, or allergic reactions. Talk to your doctor prior to receive Botox® treatment for a complete list of possible side effects.
