Q: What Is Jeuveau?

Botox® is one of the world’s most famous brands. Known as a neuromodulator, Botox® is used to erase crow’s feet and other lines on the upper third of the face. The FDA first approved Botox® for cosmetic use in 2002. Then about a decade ago, two new neuromodulators became available: Dysport® and Xeomin®. As of May 2019, there is a new option available called Jeuveau™. Jeuveau is a new alternative to Botox®, Dysport®, and Xeomin®. Created by the California-based Evolus Corporation, Jeuveau is a new neurotoxin made for the treatment of glabellar lines, the lines colloquially known as frown lines or the 11s. It first received FDA approval in February 2019 and is now offered by Dr. Turk at Naples Cosmetic Surgery.

Q: How Does Jeuveau Work?

Like Botox®, Jeuveau™ is a neuromodulator made primarily from the botulinum toxin type A. When injected into a muscle, the botulinum toxin in Jeuveau™ blocks the nerve messages sent from the muscle to the brain. Because the brain never receives the nerve signals to contract the muscle, the muscle stays at rest. As we form various expressions, such as frowning or showing surprise, this engages muscles around our eyes, between our brows, and on the forehead. Over time and hundreds of thousands of contractions, wrinkles begin to form on the surface skin when we make these expressions. When Jeuveau™ is injected and relaxes the muscle, it keeps the wrinkle from forming on the skin above.

Question 2

What Areas Can Jeuveau Be Used To Treat?

Answer

Currently, Jeuveau™ has only been approved for glabellar lines. These are also known as frown lines or the 11s (because they usually show up as one or two vertical creases between your eyebrows). If you’d like, Dr. Turk may be able to use Jeuveau™ “off-label” on the other areas treated by BOTOX®, forehead lines and crow’s feet. Since the makeup of Jeuveau™ is the same and the mechanism of relaxing the muscle is the same, it’s likely your results will be the same. It’s assumed the FDA will approve Jeuveau™ eventually for the same cosmetic uses as Botox^®.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Jeuveau?

Answer

Jeuveau™ only works on dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles formed by muscle contractions under the skin. Like Botox^®, when Jeuveau™ is injected into a muscle forming a wrinkle above the botulinum toxin blocks the nerve messages being sent from the muscle to the brain. Since the brain doesn’t receive the message to contract the muscle, the muscle stays at rest and the wrinkle it causes during contraction never forms.

If you have dynamic wrinkles, Jeuveau™ is a good option to erase them. If you have wrinkles caused by sun damage and declining collagen production (called static wrinkles) on the mid to lower areas of the face, Jeuveau™ won’t work on these wrinkles. They need dermal fillers.

Is Jeuveau Painful?

Answer

Dr. Turk injects Jeuveau™ with a very tiny needle, and it is not injected to great depth. Most patients equate the feeling to that of a pinprick.

When Can I Return To Work After My Jeuveau Session?

Answer

BOTOX® has always been known as a “lunchtime procedure.” That’s because it only takes 10-15 minutes to inject and there is no recovery or downtime. Jeuveau™ is the same thing. You can return to work immediately after your procedure is finished. The one thing you need to avoid is rubbing the injection sites for 24 hours. Doing so can make the botulinum toxin migrate to an unintended muscle.

Can I Have Jeuveau If I Have Previously Used BOTOX, Dysport, Or Xeomin?

Answer

Yes. After any of these neuromodulators run their course and the body absorbs the inert botulinum toxin, there are no residual effects.

Question 8

Can I Combine Jeuveau With Other Procedures?

Answer

Neurotoxins and dermal fillers work on different types of wrinkles on different areas of the face, so there isn’t any overlap in their treatment areas. You can have Jeuveau™ to erase your frown lines and a dermal filler such as Restylane® to remove your smile lines in the same session.
