LEAVE THE MYTHS TO ZEUS AND COMPANY

Cosmetic Services Naples FLMyths have been around as long as we humans have been. They’ve been a way to amaze listeners with superhuman feats usually intricately linked a moral. When you look in the dictionary, the meaning of the word originally was that of a traditional story, passed on from generation to generation and often explaining superhuman feats. That could be why they meaning of the word has shifted to something that is widely held, but false.

There are plenty of myths out there these days. The aesthetic industry and plastic surgeons have their fair share. Here are seven myths about the business that Dr. Turk would like to dispel.

PLASTIC SURGERY DOESN’T LEAVE SCARS
When human skin is cut, healing creates a scar. That is simply how skin and healing works. Talented plastics surgeons such as Dr. Turk can minimize the appearance of scars by placing the incisions in inconspicuous places such as where a natural crease occurs.

BREAST AUGMENTATION IS A ONE-TIME EVENT
Breast implants have a limited lifespan, usually around 10 to 15 years. Plus, as the person with implants ages, her breasts will still droop with that aging. So, you will likely need another breast implant replacement procedure, and possibly a breast lift.

LIPOSUCTION IS A GREAT WEIGHT LOSS TOOL
Liposuction is meant to remove pockets of fat that don’t respond to exercise or diet changes. Things like love handles. It is not meant to be an easy way to lose weight. In fact, removing too much fat at one time is dangerous. Dr. Turk wants his liposuction patients to be within 10 percent of their ideal weight.

PLASTIC SURGERY AND COSMETIC SURGERY ARE THE SAME THINGS
A board-certified plastic surgeon has completed five years of surgical training at an accredited hospital, at least two years focusing on plastic surgery. Other physicians can have some training in plastic surgery to do cosmetic procedures in certain areas. But the level of training is not the same. Dr. Turk is board-certified aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon.

YOU CAN’T GO OUT IN THE SUN AFTER SURGERY
You should limit your sun exposure because it can delay your healing to a degree and it can make your scars redden. But, as long as you wear sunscreen, you don’t have to pretend you’re a vampire.

LIPOSUCTION ISN’T PERMANENT FAT REMOVAL
Fat removed by liposuction is permanently gone from that area. We only have so many fat cells, the number being set when we exit puberty. If you gain a ton of weight new fat cells can be created, but otherwise, their number is static. Any fat cells vacuumed away are gone for good. Good riddance.

COST IS ALL YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN CONTEMPLATING COSMETIC SURGERY
Almost all cosmetic surgery (not reconstructive surgery) is elective and not covered by insurance, but the cost is not the only thing to consider. Your expectations need to be realistic. A procedure isn’t going to make you an entirely new person. You may have a nicer nose or rounder chest, but a procedure doesn’t make your whole life change. Unrealistic expectations make for unsatisfied patients.

Don’t be swayed by myths in the aesthetic world. If you have questions about any procedure, please call Dr. Turk at (239) 348-4357.
