Better Skin Through Chemicals…What?

Exfoliation is the key to good skin. That’s why women are somewhat envious of men who shave away their old, damaged skin cells on their cheeks and neck every morning. Exfoliation is key to remove the dead surface layer of your skin allowing the healthier skin beneath to show itself.
At Naples Cosmetic Surgery, we offer a variety chemical peels to provide that exfoliation. Different peels are categorized by their active ingredients and penetrate the skin in different degrees.
How low will you go?
At Naples Cosmetic Surgery, we offer three different types of peels. The depth and aggressiveness of the peel is dictated by the main chemical.

  • Light chemical peels remove the outmost layer of skin to effectively treat acne, wrinkles, dryness, and uneven skin tone.
  • Medium peels remove cells from the deeper portions of the epidermis (the outer layer of the skin) to treat deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.
  • Deep peels penetrate down into the dermis layer and are much more aggressive. They are recommended for removing scars, addressing deep wrinkles, and peeling precancerous growths.

How they are done
During any chemical peel, the face is first cleaned and then the chemical is applied for a certain duration and then washed away. This is how we perform our peels at Naples Cosmetic Surgery.
In a light chemical peel a solution of salicylic, lactic, or glycolic acid is applied directly onto the skin with a cotton ball or sponge. These acids occur in fruit, sour milk, and plants and are quite mild. The solution is left on the skin for 10 minutes, during which the patient will feel a mild stinging sensation. Then a neutralizing solution is applied and the area is washed. You can have regular peels of this sort to keep your skin looking fresh.
During a medium chemical peel, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is applied to the target areas. It is left on the skin for a few minutes and then a cool compress is applied to soothe the skin. A neutralizing solution is NOT applied in medium peels. TCAs are the preferred chemical solution for dark-skinned patients and can be used on the neck and other areas of the body without scarring.
In a deep peel, phenol acid is applied to the skin. Due to the strength of the chemicals used, the procedure is broken up into phases, with a 10- or 20-minute interval in between, to limit the skin’s exposure. The full deep peel procedure takes up to 90 minutes. Deep peels require the most recovery time, as the skin will crust over and scab in the treatment areas.
