5 Tips for Preparing for a Deep Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are an effective way to refresh the skin by removing damaged surface layers of the skin on the face to diminish imperfections and produce healthy, glowing skin. Chemical peels range from mild to strong. A light to medium peel does not require significant preparation, but a deeper facial peel generally requires a skin care regimen prior to treatment session. It’s important to know how to prepare for your chemical peel in order to get the most out of your treatment.

  • Don’t stress out your skin. Avoid tanning booths, which have artificial UV radiation and can significantly damage your skin. It’s also important to refrain from other chemical peels prior to your session. It’s best to space your peels at least one month apart. Microdermabrasion treatments, which are similar to chemical peels, should also be avoided, as should waxing for at least 7 days prior to treatment.
  • Moisturize well. It’s also best to use sunscreen prior to your facial peel, as your skin will be ultra-sensitive to the sun afterward. By starting a skin care regimen ahead of time, you will help ensure good results that last.
  • Share any medications and allergies with your doctor. In some cases, deep chemical peels require sedation beforehand. For this reason, it’s a good idea to tell your doctor about any allergies you may have in order to avoid any potential drug allergies. Also, be sure to share any medications you’re taking with your doctor. Certain medications can increase sun sensitivity, and your skin will be even more sensitive to sunlight after your treatment.
  • Arrange for a ride home. Because deep-tissue chemical peels sometimes require sedation in order to penetrate deeper into your skin, you’ll need to arrange for someone to take you home.
  • Plan your recovery. Buy a wide-brimmed hat to help shield your face from the sun. It may also be necessary to take some time off work, as you will likely experience some discomfort, swelling, and scabbing. And once the peel phase is over, your skin will typically be red, so stock up on concealer to wear in order to counterbalance your flushed skin.
